Best Arts Colleges in India

Find the Best Arts Colleges in India

Which is the best arts college in India in 2026? The answer depends on who’s ranking. The Week-Hansa Research’s 2026 arts survey puts Lady Shri Ram College for Women first, while NIRF’s latest official college ranking, puts Hindu College, Delhi, first. This guide compares both lists side by side, explains why they differ, and shows how to choose among the best arts colleges in India, including the top arts colleges in India outside Delhi, for 2026 admissions.

Which Is the Best Arts College in India?

Two credible rankings, two different winners. Nobody panic.

  • The Week-Hansa Research Best Colleges Survey 2026 (published June 2026) ranks arts colleges on their own. Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) is first with 692 points.
  • NIRF 2025, the newest official government ranking, puts Hindu College first with a score of 84.01. LSR sits at rank 17 there.

The gaps at the top are small. In The Week’s list, the top five sit within 18 points of each other (692 to 674). Hindu College trails LSR by just 13. In NIRF, first and second place differ by 0.81 points out of 100.

So treat the leaders as a cluster, not a staircase. The next sections show what each list measures, which tells you which one to trust for your situation.

How The Week scores a college?

The final score has two parts:

  • Perceptual score, out of 400. Based on nominations and rankings from 1,105 academic experts and 3,507 students. (Recruiters were surveyed only for engineering colleges.)
  • Factual score, out of 600. Based on data about age and accreditation, infrastructure and facilities, faculty, research and academics, and student intake and exposure.

The survey ran across 22 cities. The Week sent its data request to more than 3,500 colleges, and 501 responded in time.

NIRF vs The Week: Why the Same College Ranks Differently?

Line the two lists up and you’ll spot the differences fast.

CollegeThe Week 2026 (Arts)NIRF 2025 (Colleges)
Lady Shri Ram College for Women1 (692)17 (69.87)
St. Stephen’s College2 (683)5 (79.41)
Hindu College3 (679)1 (84.01)
Miranda House4 (675)2 (83.20)
Loyola College, Chennai5 (674)14 (71.14)
Hansraj College6 (629)3 (81.75)
Madras Christian College7 (628)16 (70.57)
St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai8 (627)89 (55.16)
St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata9 (623)8 (76.07)
Gargi College10 (622)33 (62.48)

LSR shows the gap best. NIRF’s own scorecard gives it a perfect 100 on perception and 94.69 on graduation outcomes. But it scores only 61.03 on teaching resources and 29.41 on research. Those last two carry heavy weight in NIRF’s formula.

NIRF scores each college out of 100 using five parameters:

  • Teaching, learning, and resources: 40%
  • Research and professional practice: 15%
  • Graduation outcomes: 25%
  • Outreach and inclusivity: 10%
  • Perception: 10%

The Week hands 40% of its total to perception and 60% to factual data. So a college with a strong reputation but a lighter research record tends to rise in The Week and slide in NIRF. That’s the likely reason for LSR’s 1-versus-17 split, though neither ranking publishes a cause.

One more point on method: NIRF has no arts category. It ranks arts, science, and commerce colleges together in one “College” list, next to eight discipline streams like Engineering and Law. For an arts-only view, you need surveys like The Week’s.

NIRF: The Latest Official Top 10

As of early October 2026, NIRF hasn’t published its 2026 college list, so the 2025 edition (announced September 4, 2025) is still the newest official ranking. Six of these ten are Delhi University colleges.

Best Arts Colleges in India Outside Delhi

Delhi owns the top of both lists, but the map is wider. The Week’s 2026 arts ranking places these colleges elsewhere:

  • Chennai: Loyola College (5), Madras Christian College (7), Stella Maris College (13), Ethiraj College for Women (20)
  • Mumbai: St. Xavier’s College (8), Mithibai College (16), Jai Hind College (25), Sophia College of Women (26)
  • Kolkata: St. Xavier’s College (9)
  • Bengaluru: Christ (Deemed to be University) (11), St. Joseph’s University (17), Mount Carmel College (19)
  • Pune: Fergusson College (18), Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce (22)

If moving to Delhi isn’t realistic, a strong college in your own city can beat a famous name that adds rent, travel, and homesickness.

Arts or Fine Arts: Which “Arts College” Do You Mean?

“Arts” means two different things, and people mix them up.

Humanities (BA). Literature, history, psychology, political science, and similar subjects. Both ranking tables above cover this group.

Fine, visual, and performing arts (BFA and related degrees). Painting, sculpture, design, dance, drama, and music. Education portals often name Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, the Faculty of Fine Arts at MSU Baroda, and Kala Bhavana at Visva-Bharati in Santiniketan here.

None of those appear in the tables above. Judge them on studio facilities, faculty, alumni work, and portfolio-based admission. Check each institution’s own notification for its entrance process.

How Admission Works in 2026?

For Delhi University colleges, the entrance route is CUET-UG, the Common University Entrance Test. Careers360 lists Hindu College as accepting CUET UG scores for 2026 admissions.

Cutoffs vary a lot by course. Careers360 reports that Hindu College’s 2025 general-category BA cutoffs ran from 480 for Sanskrit to 935 for Political Science. The takeaway: your subject matters as much as your target college.

The baseline eligibility for most BA programs is a pass in Class 12 or an equivalent exam. Cutoffs shift every cycle, so check each college’s official site for current numbers. Colleges outside Delhi University set their own admission rules. Fine arts institutions often add their own tests or portfolio reviews.

How to Choose the Best Arts College for You?

Start with the subject, not the rank. A college with a strong English department may be an average pick for economics.

Then work through these filters:

  • Which ranking matches your priority? Want research and resources? Lean on NIRF. Want reputation among academics and students? The Week’s survey fits better.
  • Location and cost. Delhi colleges bring higher living costs for outstation students. A regional college may leave you with more money and more sleep.
  • Admission route. CUET scores decide Delhi University entry. If your score is borderline, build a backup list early.
  • College type. Women’s colleges such as LSR, Miranda House, and PSGR Krishnammal College for Women suit students who prefer that environment.
  • Score gaps. The top five in The Week’s list are 18 points apart. Don’t agonize over a few points.
  • Student feedback. Talk to current students or recent graduates in your department. Rankings can’t tell you how the classes feel.
